The Ace of Spades from recycled garden spades for David Domoney's silver-gilt medal winning garden of the same name
Anwick Forge produced a 2.5m tall Ace of Spades motif for David Domoney's garden at Chealsea Flower Show 2009. This biker's garden, also called Ace of Spades - a reference to Motorhead's 'biker anthem' - won a silver-gilt medal in the Urban Garden category.
The garden features several items of recycled machinery and recycled tools. Indeed, our Ace of Spades was made from approximately 80 recycled garden spades. These were gathered from gardeners in a Wyevale 'spade swap' and then delivered to the forge. We then removed the shafts, cut and assembled the spade heads into an attractive composition and carefully welded them all together in the desired shape. The structure is self-supporting, so the welding had to be strong but completely invisible from the front.
