Gallery - Groundwork Lincolnshire - Monks Abbey Ruins
The cast iron plaques depict scenes of monastic life which are based on local school pupils' drawings
As part of this commission from Groundwork Lincolnshire, we held art workshops with children from a local primary school whose task it was to provide us with drawings  that featured scenes of monastic life.  As is typical with the projects we carry out with Groundwork, the children also came to to forge to see our blacksmiths at work and to have a go at the anvil themselves - an experience which all thoroughly enjoyed and which few will forget.
A local professional ceramicist re-interpreted the children's drawings in clay tiles, which we then used as patterns from which cast iron plaques were produced.  These were then incorporated into a pair of double gates and a pedestrian gate.
The children who did the drawings took part in the official opening of the site and were both amazed and delighted to see their artwork immortalised in metal.
