Gallery - Replica altar candlestick
An exact copy of one of a pair of altar candlesticks which was stolen from a church
Forging a piece from scratch is one thing, but forging an exact copy of a pre-existing piece - and one that will sit alongside that original piece as well - really does test the skills of the blacksmith! Fortunately, Tim was more than up to the task: the replica is indistinguishble from the original other than the condition of the paintwork.
This candlestick replaces one of a matching pair of candlesticks that had been stolen from the church where they formed the altar decoration. Despite the pressure of having to forge a candlestick that was exactly the same in every respect as another one, this piece was a joy to work on, thanks to the delicacy and the classical lines of the piece, which gave Tim the opportunity to use a range of traditional backsmithing skills in the forge.
