Gallery - Genuine wrought iron railings can - and should - be restored

When restoring railings it is usually worth restoring the stonework as well
Older railings such as these will typically have been individually mounted directly into the stonework and fixed in place with lead.  Consequently, when it comes to restoring your railings, it may be sensible to consider replacing the coping stones as well.  Here, the stones were badly cracked and flaking, and the railing sockets were in very poor condition, so restoring only the railiings whilst leaving the coping stones untouched would effectively have been doing only half the job.
