Gallery - Genuine wrought iron railings can - and should - be restored

Restoring your iron railings can be rather like giving your property a facelift!
Restoring your iron railings can be rather like giving your property a facelift!
Even though these railings are very simple in style and are only a few metres in length, the difference between 'before' and 'after' is quite remarkable.  Each railing had a new section of genuine wrought iron fire-welded onto the end where considerable corrosion had occurred, new railings and dogbars (the shorter railings that alternate with the full height ones) were forged from genuine wrought iron to replace the missing ones, and the half overlap joints in the top rail were renewed.  Since genuine wrought iron will be damaged by hot-dip galvanising, these railings were finished with a zinc primer before adding a micaceous iron oxide undercoat and a semi-gloss black top coat.
