The exposed position of this forged and cast iron crucifix and decorative panel mounted on the roof of a village church in the Wolds of Lincolnshire had left it at the mercy of the elements.

The plan was for our blacksmiths to restore it to its former glory using as much of the original material as technically and economically possible, but once we had the piece at ground level, it quickly became apparent to us and to English Heritage that so much of the original metal had corroded away that a more radical approach would be necessary.
